I should explain that it looks like a scissors but has grooves on the cutting edge so that it just thins the hair but doesn't change the hairstyle.. My kids have VERY thick hair and i am enjoying using the hair thinner thingy on them. They are looking so civilized for once. will it have a bad effect in the long run?

They are called thinning shears and please be very careful using them If you cut it too close to the scalp your gonna have little hairs sticking everywhere and make sure you dont use them in one spot if they have long hair make sure you cut it somewhat in the middle of the hair shaft. just dont go to crazy with it

The disadvantage would be in overdoing it, and it doesn't sound like you've done that. Another disadvantage might be in what it looks like when their hair gets longer, but that's not relevant if you keep it short or medium length. There's no permanent effect if hair grows out, and it almost always does. Do the kids like it as much as you do?
